Our History

Katla Whale Watching is a family-owned company. Based in Reykjavík Iceland, it’s father and sons company, as well as good friends. This Icelandic family is known for its lifelong passion for enjoying Iceland’s beautiful nature, and that was the motivation for entering the whale watching scene.

The name Katla is a common female name in Iceland and is the name of one of the biggest active volcanos in the country, but the most significant factor in choosing that name was that it’s the name of the father’s grandchild.

Our goal is to offer a powerful and exciting activity for our customers.

Safety

Our tours are dependent on weather and sea conditions. The coastal weather in Iceland is subject to change as we can sometimes experience the different weather conditions of a whole year during one day.

For your safety and comfort, we reserve the right to change or cancel departures, even with short notice, should weather or other conditions change.

Our Rib speedboats is equipped with a very high standard of modern safety and emergency equipment, and all passengers are dressed in warm floatation suits and life vests. Our crew members have completed courses in Basic Safety Training.

## Experience the Amazing Wild Life

Katla Whale Watching is the perfect way to experience the amazing wild life found in Faxa Bay, on whose southern shore the capital Reykjavik is located. Many species of whales, dolphins and even seals are to be found in these waters. In addition, the bay is home to millions of sea birds of various species, including the beautiful puffin.

Our fast maneuverable boats can swiftly move from place to place and so cover a wide area, which of course increases the likelihood of spotting whales. So we´d be delighted to have you come aboard and take the tour with us. We sail daily and you can choose trips from 10:00 in the morning to 21:30 at night. Each trip takes about 1 and a 1/2 hour.

The Whales

There are 23 species of whales around Iceland, and many of them are in the Faxaflói Bay outside of Reykjavík. They are from about 1.5 meters up to 15 meters long and when you see these gentle giants up close you really feel alive. The most common whale and dolphin species in Faxa Bay are Minke whales, humpback whales, dolphins, porpoises and in the beginning of summer blue whales and fin whales could be seen.

**Length**: 20 – 33 meters **Weight**: 110 – 190 tons **Life span**: about 90 years

**Diet**: krill and plankton

**Fun facts**: They are the biggest animals ever on earth. A blue whale’s heart is big as a car, its flukes as broad as a small aeroplane and some of the blood vessels so big that you can swim through them.

**Diet**: krill, plankton and small fish

**Fun facts**: The colour of the lower jaw is what makes fin whales unique. It is asymmetrical with the right side yellow-white and the left side dark gray or black.

**Length**: 1,5 – 2 meters **Weight**: 55 – 70 kilos **Life span**: about 30 years

**Diet**: various small schooling fish

**Fun facts**: They are among the smallest of all whale species, reaching a size like an average human being.

**Length**: 13 – 17 meters **Weight**: 25 – 40 tons **Life span**: about 95 years

**Diet**: krill, plankton and small fish

**Fun facts**: They most often raise their flukes above the surface when diving, revealing their unique “fingerprints”. This black and white pattern underneath their flukes can be used for identification.

**Diet**: mainly squidand various fish

**Fun facts**: They are sometimes called “pothead whales” because the shape of their head reminded early whalers of black cooking pots.

**Fun facts**: They are the most common whales around Iceland. There are two types of minke whales; the northern kind (which we see) has a white band on each flipper, while the southern type does not.

**Length**: 6 – 9 meters **Weight**: 3 – 9 tons **Life span**: ? ~ 50 years /? ~ 60 – 70 years

**Diet**: mainly herring

**Fun facts**: Remember “Free Willy” ? That must be the world’s most famous Orca. His real name was Keiko and he was born in Icelandic waters around 1978.

**Fun facts**: The males have only two teeth at the front of the lower jaw while females have no teeth at all – in difference to most other toothed whales which can have up to hundreds of teeth each.

**Fun facts**: Their diving technique is different from most other whales as they do not hump their backs or show their flukes while diving, they simply sink below the surface.

**Diet**: squid and various fish

**Fun facts**: They can dive as deep as 3000 meters and stay submerged more than two hours. Furthermore, their blow points forward and to the left at a 45° angle.

We will put together a RIB tour that suits your needs, our boat has a 12 person capacity, and the staff has safety as their first priority.

A few examples of private tours are: islands and fjords, whales, birds, puffins, bachelor and bachelorette tours, see the sun set out in the open sea. Reykjavik by sea/boat is an experience most people diminish, including Icelanders. However it is truly amazing sight, the wildlife and the astonishing view.

A few minutes from the harbor you will find Engey and Akurey, and after a few more minutes of sailing you will find Lundey, Þerney and Viðey.&#x20;

# Terms and conditions

### Weather conditions

All our tours are weather dependent, and may be subject to cancellations. Our captains will make their decisions based on many years of experience and always keeping in mind our passenger safety and comfort.

We can reschedule you for another day, but please call us to make sure we have availability next time you want to try.

In case of cancellations due to unfavorable weather conditions and you are not able to reschedule, you will receive a full refund (note: if you are using your “free ticket to try again” this does not apply)

We can never guarantee sightings as we are working with wild nature and animals. We always do our best to provide a great service which includes taking you out on sea to explore the nature and its wonders out in Faxaflói Bay.

### Sightings - What if I don't see anything on my tour?

If your Puffin or Whale Watching tour does not encounter any whales, dolphins of puffins, we offer you another ticket for free.

**Please note that we cannot guarantee a tour on the next day/evening, it all depends on weather and sea conditions.**

We have had 100% success on our Puffin Watching & Sea Angling tours, however if there ever comes a day where you don’t see any puffins or there are no fish caught, we will offer you another free tour!

### Change in reservation

If you wish to change your reservation we kindly ask that you give us advance notice, we are very flexible and will help with any alterations or changes you would like to make.

### Cancellation policy

If you cancel your tour 24 hours prior to departure we will fully refund your ticket.

### Prices & Schedules?

a) Reykjavik by boat reserves the right to change prices in the event of currency fluctuations, taxes or other cost increases out of our control. Tickets purchased prior to the increase will not be affected by the change.

b) Reykjavik by boat reserves the right to make any changes to its tour schedules if need be – informing all our clients that have already made a booking on the specified tour and making the information immediately accessible to our future customers.

c) Tickets that have been purchased from someone other than a licensed travel agent / hotel / tourist info will not be valid on board our boats.

### Departures - When should I arrive?

All our tours depart from Reykjavik’s Old Harbour [(Location)](https://reykjavikbyboat.is/contact) and the departure time is indicated on your voucher/confirmation. We ask that all our passengers arrive at least 20 minutes prior to departure for check in and boarding (recommended time is 30 minutes to be safe).

### Parking

Free parking at the harbour is limited and we advice you to make use of the public parking spaces that are located all around the centre of Reykjavik – cost should be about 225 ISK per hour (our tours will range from 1-4 hours approx.)

### Mobility issues

If you have any mobility issues, medical problems,  please let us know in advance and we will assist you. We have prepared our boats to be as accessible as possible – and we are always happy to help out – just ask us!
